Boofy's Best for Pets presents a community screening event to celebrate the New Mexico premiere of director Mijie Li's award-winning documentary MILES TO GO BEFORE SHE SLEEPS, about an idealistic schoolteacher in China who lays her life on the line to expose a nationwide dog theft ring that sends thousands of stolen pets to slaughterhouses. Q&A afterwards with the film's writer/producer/editor, J. Faye Yuan. Arrive early for free tacos from Root 66 Food Truck sponsored by Vegan Outreach. Vegan sweets & treats available from Tía-Mom's Cocina.  Tickets are $10.

This is a David and Goliath story about a woman on a mission to protect the most vulnerable animal population. Filming for MILES TO GO BEFORE SHE SLEEPS began in 2014, when Mijie Li became the first filmmaker to visit Yang’s animal sanctuary outside Tianjin, China. This unique access lays the foundation for a complex character study of Yang - a fearless activist to some and a woman driven to isolation to others. Yet her singular pursuit of animal justice captures the fighting spirit of our times - independent yet uncompromising, relentless yet world-weary.

[Please note that some viewers may find the contents of the film distressing. The film is in Mandarin Chinese with English subtitles.  Screening takes place at the Guild Cinema, 3405 Central Ave NE, Albuquerque, NM; 505-255-1848.]
